The Last Laugh

The Last Laugh

Blake Mercifer stood backstage, adjusting his tie and taking deep breaths. Years of struggling, years of terrible open mic nights, and now this – his final shot at comedy greatness.

“Remember our deal,” a gravelly voice whispered from the shadows. The Devil leaned against the wall, grinning. “Make them laugh like never before.”

Two years ago, Blake had been a nobody. Countless rejections, empty comedy clubs, and crushing disappointment had driven him to make a desperate bargain. One night, after another soul-crushing performance, he’d summoned the Devil.

“I’ll do anything to be the greatest comedian who ever lived,” Blake had pleaded.

The Devil’s terms were simple: Absolute comedic success, but at the cost of his soul when he performed his final, most legendary set.

Tonight was that night.

Blake walked onto the stage, the packed club falling silent. Something felt different. The energy was electric.

He started with his usual warm-up jokes, but something was brewing. A joke was forming in his mind – the ultimate punchline.

“So,” Blake began, a mischievous glint in his eye, “you want to hear the funniest joke in the universe?”

The audience leaned forward, captivated.

Blake took a deep breath. The joke started to take shape in his mind – a combination of timing, absurdity, and pure comedic genius that would break every known rule of comedy.

As he opened his mouth to speak, something extraordinary happened.

The joke was so monumentally hilarious that Blake began to laugh before he could even tell it. His laughter grew, becoming uncontrollable. The audience watched in stunned silence as Blake’s laughter became maniacal, borderline insane.

Backstage, the Devil watched with growing excitement.

Blake’s laughter reached a fever pitch. His body convulsed, tears streaming down his face. The joke was so perfect, so absolutely devastating in its comedic brilliance, that it was killing him.

And then, in a moment of pure, cosmic comedy, Blake literally laughed himself to death.

The Devil erupted in uncontrollable laughter. “Now THAT,” he howled, “was a hell of a punchline!”

The audience sat in shocked silence. Had they just witnessed the greatest comedy performance in history – or the most bizarre death?

Blake Mercifer had become a legend. The comedian who quite literally died making people laugh.

As his body was carried away, the Devil wiped a tear of laughter from his eye. Some deals, he thought, are worth every soul.

The ultimate joke had been told. And nobody would ever know its contents.

Just the memory of a laughter so powerful it could kill.
